alek.. even the thought of him made her smile, made her cheeks the slightest bit rosy, caused butterflies to flutter around in her stomach. she couldn't really peg what brought it on, though. if it was the hair, the eyes, the perfect accent..but whatever it was, she wasn't going to stop thinking about it. before she met alek, carina honestly didn't smile a lot. she was too busy to smile, too much to do, too little time. of course, the forced little smiles that she put on for her dad to make him think that everything was okay, as well as the larger than life, plastic smiles she showed onstage. but even those, those candy apple colored, teeth bearing smiles were just a show. inside, she was criticizing herself constantly, degrading and punishing herself for not doing something better, for not being better. but somehow, as she got closer to alek, all of that went away. it was like he was her personal medicine, like she couldn't survive without her daily dose of him. he was like..her drug.
carina sat cross-legged on the large, cushy armchair in the living room where her dad sat ritualistically after work, a coke, the daily paper, and whatever dinner she had made for him that night in hand. but he was staying late that evening, and as the sun slowly but steadily fell over the horizon, she absentmindedly doodled in the margins of her english textbook (which consisted mostly of alek's name and her own). not that anyone had particularly noticed, but today was her eighteenth birthday. the first day of her legally being an adult, free to do as she pleases. her dad had gotten up early that morning and made her breakfast, something that he only did in extreme emergencies. though the toast was burnt and the eggs were a little underdone, she appreciated it. she appreciated him. he had always been there for her, her entire life. he worked two jobs or more when she was growing up to keep her in ballet; he saw the potential in her. she loved him, he was the perfect father in her eyes, despite his clear faults.
she picked up her mobile from the arm of the chair and looked at the screen, willing it to show her a message from alek. a message from somebody. but mostly alek. as she put down her phone once again, unsatisfied, she wished she had made herself a birthday cake. or a cupcake, at least. something she could make a wish on.

of course alek after knew it was his girlfriends birthday and so getting up and ready looking not fancy but presentable he went over to carina's house thinking on his way there. after considering different things with his sister, ever, they had come to the decision that he would take her to the monster bash. it was a event that a lot of kids and adults went to. alek figured it should be fun and knocked on the eighteen year old girl's door with a smile.
after a moment he pulled out his phone and texted his purple haired sister i'm going to her house now. wish me luck'. alek smiled and put his phone away, unsure of what to do next. alek looked at the sky. it was a nice, cool night.

carina had zoned out, staring at the blank white wall in front of her obviously wasn't very mentally stimulating. in her blank haze, she didn't really think about much. it seemed like one of those rare times at which she could simply let her mind sleep, let it relax. because even as she slept, she thought. there was always something to think about.
her unfocused eyes flicked to the door as she heard a soft knock, pressing her mouth shut. she furrowed her eyebrows as she untwisted herself from the soft chair and took small, tentative steps towards the door. she hadn't been expecting anyone, and her dad would have used his key. it was dark outside, only faint hints of sunlight remaining as the colours cascaded over the horizon. a little nervously she twisted the door knob and opened the door, the creaks coming from the hinges not helping her edginess. and then there was a familiar face, familiar hair, that familiar smile. her lips reformed an excited smile, a happy smile. she wrapped her arms around his waist and stood up on her tiptoes, placing her lips on his in an almost hungry kiss. she pulled back and nuzzled into his neck. hi she was a little breathless, but it was hardly noticeable. then again, that tended to happen a lot to her whenever alek was around.
